Product Overview

The DV164131 is a PICkit-3 debug express, It includes Pickit-3 and 44-pin demo board with a PIC18F45k20 microcontroller. The MPLAB PICkit-3 allows debugging and programming of PIC and dsPIC flash microcontrollers at a most affordable price point using the powerful graphical user interface of the MPLAB integrated development environment (IDE). The MPLAB PICkit-3 is connected to the design engineer's PC using a full speed USB interface and can be connected to the target via an Microchip debug (RJ-11) connector (compatible with MPLAB ICD-2, MPLAB ICD-3 and MPLAB REAL ICE). The connector uses two device I/O pins and the reset line to implement in-circuit debugging and in-circuit serial programming.
  • PICkit-3 features full speed 12 Mbits/s USB interface to host PC
  • MPLAB IDE compatible
  • Built-in over-voltage/short circuit monitor
  • Firmware upgradeable from PC/web download
  • Read/write program and data memory of microcontroller
  • Erase of program memory space with verification
  • Freeze-peripherals at breakpoint
  • Program up to 512K byte flash with the programmer to Go
  • Diagnostic LEDs (power, busy, error)
  • Features real-time execution

    MICROCHIP - DV164131 - DEBUG EXPRESS, PICKIT 3, MPLAB IDE, FOR PIC, DSPIC 3 5 1 1
A must hve for PIC18 work, but... I build PIC18 projects as well as PIC10, 16 and 32. The PICKT 3 is the Microchip endorsed development debug and programmer. For the most part it works as advertised with MPLAB but it's not perfect. I have heard the PICKit 2 was a better product. The issues I have include inconsistent ability to download code to target as well as use as a debugger with MPLAB X. The eval board is excellent if you want to get the basics of GPIO and ADC down, and of course its a simple on board header to connect to the PICKIT 3. For other projects, you will need a 6 pin male (flat 0.1" spaced connector) cable to connect the PICKIT 3 to your breadboard. Instructions are simple easy quick, but the download and debug issues are all the same with MPLAB 3. December 25, 2014

    A:
This product makes sense if two conditions are met. 1) you are looking to program PIC18 family MCU's, 2) you do not already own a PicKit 3. You will need a PicKit 3 to program any of the PIC MCU's. If you are looking to work with anything other than PIC18's then I would suggest purchasing the PicKit 3 separately . You can download MPLAB X from the Microchip site along with a lot of example code etc. A book by David Smith entitled PIC Projects and Applications Using C is also a great place to start.

    A:
The PicKit 3 is used to program any of the Microchip MCU's which you would connect via I2C or GPIO w driver to the LCD. So no, its not for programming the WD C2401P directly, but if you are driving the LCD with a PIC MCU, then it would be the way to go, once you have the MCU picked.
