Ingress Protection (IP) Ratings

The IP (Ingress Protection) Code is defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) under the IEC 60529 standard. It designates the various types and degrees of protection afforded to electrical equipment by its protective enclosure.

IP ratings consist of the letters IP followed by two digits and an optional letter.

The first digit refers to the level of protection against hazardous parts and the ingress of solid foregin objects. The second digit refers to the level of protection against the ingress of water.

This standard provides engineers with more detailed information regarding the protection status of a product than vague terms like waterproof. Learn more about IP ratings and get to know our broad portfolio of IP rated products below.

Our Common IP Ratings

This is a brief table outlining some of the common IP ratings that you'll see across our site. We do offer products with ratings not listed below.

IP RatingWater ProtectionDust Protection
IP65Water at 12.5 liters per minute through 6.3mm nozzle from any directionTotal dust ingress protection
IP66Water at 100 liters per minute through 12.5mm nozzle from any directionTotal dust ingress protection
IP67Submersion into water up to 1 meter deep for amount of time specified by manufacturer Total dust ingress protection
IP68Permanent submersion beyond 1 meter into water of depth stated by manufacturerTotal dust ingress protection
IP69KWater at 80-100MPa (megapascal) and 14-16 liters per minute from four angles while the device is rotated at 5RPM Total dust ingress protection

Decode the Meaning of IP Ratings

First Digit: Protection Against Solids

The table below outlines the various levels of protection against solids (moving parts, body parts, etc.) in regards to IP ratings.

LevelObject Size Protected AgainstEffective Against
0Not protectedNo protection against contact and ingress of objects
1>50mmAny large surface of the body, such as the back of the hand, but no protection against deliberate contact with a body part
2>12.5mmFingers or similar objects
3>2.5mmTools, thick wires, etc.
4>1mmMost wires, screws, etc.
5Dust ProtectedIngress of dust is not entirely prevented, but it must not enter in sufficient quantity to interfere with the satisfactory operation of the equipment; complete protection against contact
6Dust TightNo ingress of dust; complete protection against contact

Second Digit: Protection Against Liquids

The table below outlines the various levels of protection against liquids in regards to IP ratings.

LevelObject Size Protected AgainstEffective Against
0Not protectedNo protection against contact and ingress of liquids
1Dripping waterDripping water (vertically falling drops) shall have no harmfull effect
2Dripping water when tilted up to 15°Vertically dripping water shall have no harmful effect when the enclosure is tilted at an angle up to 15° from its normal position
3Spraying waterWater falling as a spray at any angle up to 60° from the vertical shall have no harmful effect
4Splashing waterWater splashing against the enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effect
5Water jetsWater projected by a nozzle (6.3mm) against enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects
6Powerful water jetsWater projected in powerful jets (12.5mm nozzle) against the enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects
7Immersion up to 1mIngress of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the enclosure is immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time (up to 1 m of submersion)
8Immersion beyond 1mThe equipment is suitable for continuous immersion in water under conditions which shall be specified by the manufacturer. Normally, this will mean that the equipment is hermetically sealed. However, with certain types of equipment, it can mean that water can enter but only in such a manner that it produces no harmful effects
9KPowerful high temperature water jetsProtected against close-range high pressure, high temperature spray downs
