Newark Revamps Website Around Rohs Compliance Steps

CHICAGO, JANUARY 31, 2006

New format, content, services speed compliance process for engineers, component buyers

With the July 1 date looming for the EU's Restriction of Hazardous Substances directive (RoHS) to become law, Newark offers new compliance help on its RoHS Express site (at element14.com) for US and Canadian manufacturers. Newark is a subsidiary of global distributor Premier Farnell plc, and the leading small-quantity distributor of electronic components and test equipment in North America.

Newark has identified four basic steps that an original equipment manufacturer will typically consider on its way towards compliance with the RoHS directive. These steps form the framework for the revamped RoHS Express site:

  • Step 1 — Understand RoHS
  • Step 2 — Analyze parts lists/bills of material
  • Step 3 — Purchase compliant parts
  • Step 4 — Assure RoHS compliance accuracy.

Design engineers and component buyers can easily identify their level of progress, and use the tools and/or rich content provided under each step to progress towards compliance.

For example, at Step 2, a company should be analyzing their electronic part purchases, to see which are already compliant, which are changing their stock numbers and which have compliant substitutes available. Site visitors can make use of Newark's free RoHS Data Service to discern this critical information, even if they are not current customers, by calling 1.800.4.NEWARK or visiting /bom-upload-landing.

Susan Fischer, senior vice president of marketing/eCommerce for Newark comments: "RoHS compliance is not easy for any company, but smaller companies with fewer resources are at a decided disadvantage. With the information and free services we can provide, we hope to level the playing field for them."
