Most methods for current sharing are either limited, complex or both, with the creation of the LTC4370 Current Sharing Controller Linear Technology want to provide designers with unprecedented flexibility and increased system reliability.
Many high availability systems engineer redundancy into their power systems by paralleling two similar supplies with diodes (diode-OR). The result, one can handle the load when the other fails. System reliability is further increased if both supplies operate simultaneously, with each diode sharing half the load current. The resulting lower currents lead to cooler operation, reducing the failure rate by half for every 10⁰C fall in temperature and allowing faster recovery time after a supply failure. The downside is that this technique requires both active control of the supplies, a shared bus and stability compensation.
By controlling N-channel MOSFETs in series with each supply the LTC4370 is able to perform the same task with greater simplicity, reliability and with a compact footprint providing you with simpler and more reliable power systems.
