We've had 9 LC-1800s in use 24/7 since 1993, and over the years, 5 of the mechanical relays that swap out the various secondaries on the transformers have failed. The result in each case was that the equipment connected to the LC-1800 was subjected to a brownout. Unfortunately, on our units, the indicator light associated with the dead relay continued to illuminate, so we were not aware that our equipment was being fed low voltage until something burned up. In two cases, that "something" was the power switch on the unit.

Now we monitor the proper operation of the relays by periodically plugging each LC-1800 into a 140 VAC autotransformer, attaching a VOM to one of the output duplexes, and slowly turning the autotransformer voltage down from 140 to 87, watching the VOM to see that the relays engage the various secondaries on the LC-1800's transformer and thus keep the output voltage in the 110-120 VAC range.

Do the LC1800s sold today have an indicator or alert when a relay dies?

The unit has seven diagnostic LEDs that indicate input voltage levels, surge suppression status and line fault conditions. I hope this answers your question what you are looking for.
