Customer Reviews

This reliable and capable scope is a joy to use, most of the time I purchased an MDO3024 about a year ago and have really enjoyed using it for its mixed signal capabilities with 4 channel analog and 16 channel digital applications. All of the time-domain waveform capture and display in both digital via the MSO probe and analog applications work very well. I'm pretty happy with the UI, and it is a serious upgrade from my previous scope. The only problems I've had have been with performance—occasionally when using measure or search and protocol analysis the UI becomes laggy. General responsiveness is very good, but specific activities can really bog the system down. This is overall rather disappointing, as I hoped they'd have implemented a true realtime system for the user interface that had deadlines to keep the UI fast. It isn't as bad as Tek's entry level scopes, but remains my biggest complaint with the product. Occasionally I use the spectrum analyzer, but it seems like for serious RF work, the MDO4000b series is much better suited, with it's live connection to Signal-VU PC and time correlated RF/time domain displays. The spectrum analyzer is one of the areas that UI sluggishness is the worst. I'm optimistic that these performance issues can be resolved in a future software update though, in the way Tek made significant advancements to their original MDO4000 software after launch. Like most of the industry, pricing is widely variable based on software licenses that are used to enable features that are already built in the instrument. This is frustrating because the marketing position the hardware as being heavily discounted—by throwing in different options and licenses at different times—and it really makes the pricing feel made up. I wish we could all just stop playing games, enable all the features on every scope, and Tek could charge a little more for every one they sell. As I purchased this instrument for personal use, the arbitrariness strikes a bit closer to home than perhaps a business customer would experience. All in all, this is a fantastic scope and the clarity of the display and solid controls make it easy to see what is going on and fix problems. It is a very featureful instrument, and the core capabilities are just not matched by lesser scopes. I can count on it every time, and it is truly a luxury using all of the automated measurement capabilities for everyday tasks. March 27, 2015
