Yes you can use it. Discover WiFi board needs 5V/2A. I guess you have not set the J5 to DC. It is on USB by default.

Sample programs are part of your software. You can download your software on Element14 web site. Note that it needs a code number. This code number can be found on the one sheet paper that is inside the board box. This software pack includes wonderful resources for you as a beginner to professional designer. Also you can refer to Element14 community. Always you can find great notes and ideas inside the discussions.

    A:
The board has the TCP/IP Stack preinstalled which enables it to connect to a Wi-Fi network and to set up all standard Wi-Fi parameters, such as encryption and Wi-Fi security supplicant supporting WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK. It includes a HTTP, DHCP, DNS, and Web Server. This makes sure that Wi-Fi projects are up and off the ground quickly

Yes, the on board ST ARM Cortex-M3 MCU has many peripherals available such as ADC, DAC, I2C, GPIO that may be used for sensors or other applications if the Wifi board is intended to be used without a host CPU.
