    RASPBERRY-PI - RASPBRRY-MODB-512M - MODEL B - ASSEMBLED BOARD ONLY 4.6 5 35 35
Pretty Solid The Raspberry Pi is a pretty solid little SOC (system on a chip) I use it on a variety of mini projects. April 29, 2015
Very versatile, but watch the Cap I have used the Raspberry-Pi for a variety of projects. I have had an issue that has been identified by a lot of others in accidentally breaking the capacitor on the power input. The unit still works without it, but it is also really easy to re-solder the cap back on. April 19, 2015
Great for the price. This is the one where I finally broke down and jumped into Linux head first. It's great for someone wanting to play around with a linux computer without much cost beyond and hdmi cable and a television. I've had a lot of fun with it and have mine set up with RetroPie and a controller and play all the old Nintendo games. It a blast and I can't recommend buying one of these and learning the basics for cheap. April 17, 2015
The awsome pi I used these for several projects and eventually upgraded my pi and retired the old one as my DHCP server as the router's built in server was no good. I can certify 100+ days of up time without a hitch. March 10, 2015
Retropie This board went into my Retropie pc, it's done a great job! February 28, 2015

    A:
The Raspberry Pi does, indeed, come with an SD-Card reader. However, the SD reader is used to boot the device, so you will not be using it for anything else (e.g. Reading SD Cards). Raspberry.Org states that the power required is " 5 volts @ 1 amp. Not all USB power supplies provide this. It is critical to have the minimum 1 amp of power. Power is provided through a USB to micro-usb cable.

I use an apple iPhone charger which is 5V at 1 Amp. I power the Pi through a USB A male to a USB micro B male cable. This has worked very well for me but I have not tried to connect a USB hub. Presently using a 16GB no brand name SD card.

Not to split hairs over the previous answer, but a MINI usb is different than a MICRO. Raspberry Pi does not have a MINI usb -- it's a Micro USB. Not flamin' ya -- just clarifying for anyone who might become misinformed.

I'm using an Android charger -- same plug as my old HTC phone and recent Blackberry. Old blackberry devices had a trapezoid "mini USB" connector, which is not the same as this one.

    A:
Yes, the RasPi has a built-in SD card slot. It gets its power through a mini-USB connector, so it can pick up its power from any USB power source. I'm using a simple little "wall wart" power cube with a standard USB connector, and a USB to mini-USB cable.

For Newark Order code 43W5302 with Manufacturer part # RASPBRRY-MODB-512M, the size of the RAM is 512MB. However the Newark order code 83T1943 is discontinued and it was with 256MB RAM.

What other minimum accessories do I need to buy along with this so he can start using it? (without spending a lot of money. His interest may not sustain.)

    No fancy add-ons.

Yes, it's a purely software thing. Getting it running in the software in Linux will be the only task. And the distro's of Linux they have together for the Rasbo Pi may recognize it automatically. If not there are tutorials on the web.
