Product Overview

Gertboard is an input/output (I/O) extension board for the Raspberry Pi computer. It fits onto the GPIO pins of the Raspberry Pi (the double row of pins on the upper left corner) via a socket on the back of the Gertboard. A bit of care is required when putting the two devices together. It is easy to insert just one row of pins into the socket, but all of the pins need to be connected. The Gertboard gets its power from those GPIO pins, so user will need a power supply for the Raspberry Pi (RPi) that is capable of supplying a current of at least 1A. It is a flexible experimenter board that plugs directly into Raspberry Pi, and out into the physical world, allowing user to detect and respond to external physical events. Detect and output analogue voltages. Drive powerful motors. Detect switch presses. Illuminate LEDs and drive relays. Jumper cables allow user to hook up different parts of the circuit in many different ways, allowing total flexibility. All controlled by Raspberry Pi.
  • Plugs directly onto Raspberry Pi GPIO socket
  • Motor controller, capable controlling a motor bidirectionally, delivering 18V and 2A maximum
  • Dual channel D/A converter, 8bit
  • Dual channel  A/D converter, 10bit
  • Onboard Atmel ATmega328 MCU for running off board programs
  • 6 x open collector outputs
  • 12 x LED indicators
  • 3 x momentary push switches
  • 10 x strap cables and 18 x jumpers included
  • Software and manuals available to operate and learn how to use Gertboard

Applications

Hobby & Education; Security; Motor Drive & Control; Sensing & Instrumentation
ATmega device on the Gertboard operates at 3.3V If we use 5V there is a risk damaging the chip.

Customer Reviews

GERTBOARD - GERTBOARD - ATMEGA328 , ASSEMBLED GERTBOARD, FOR RASPBERRY PI 4.5 5 4 4
Gertboard for Raspberry PI I ordered the Gertboard from element14 a few weeks ago. The ordering process was easy and the product arrived, in perfect condition, quickly. I had no need to talk to customer service reps, so I have no information on this aspect of the company, but based on everything else, I'm sure they do a good job. The product was as advertised and was nicely boxed. I haven't had a chance to use it yet, so I can't speak to how well it works, but will add to this review later if it turns out there is something to say. My only reason for not giving 5 stars is because it did not come with a cable to allow you to connect to a Raspberry Pi housed in a case. To use the product I either have to buy a cable or take the Pi out of the box. Also, there were no printed instructions (but you can download and print the manual). Overall, I'm very pleased with the purchase. March 25, 2015
Great AddOn for your Pi! It comes in a great paper box. With jumper and a few cables. With this you can start directly with the test programms. For me is the Gertboard the best test thing ever. March 19, 2015
GertBoard Nice multi-function pre-assembled add-on GPIO expansion board. Allows for the use of the general purpose input/output and learning to communicate via the raspberry pi to toggle the output pins. December 29, 2014
love it! I've been playing with the Gertboard for about a week now. I'm very impressed with its capabilities, and I've been even more pleased with the documentation. Just before this, I was playing with the Embedded Pi. It was extremely frustrating. Not only was there a lack of documentation, but much of it that I found was written in broken English and difficult to understand. I bought both of these boards at the same time, and I finally decided to quit screwing with the Embedded Pi and start playing with the Gertboard. (I'm curious to hear what others' experience was with the Embedded Pi.) That was an aside to explain how refreshing the Gertboard was. The documentation is extremely thorough, and the examples and schematics are as well. Going through the user manual, with the associated schematics and Python examples, I've learned SO much. I haven't even gotten to the part where I start playing with the onboard Atmel chip! I'm excited to see what else I can do with this board. It's also exciting to know that the documentation is thorough enough that if I ever wanted to use a piece of this board (a subset of its capabilities) for a specific application, I know EXACTLY how to build it. The board is, of course, rather big, and it's meant for educational purposes, like an evaluation board. Long story short: I love it. July 6, 2013

A:
It came with 20 jumper tabs, about 10 jumper wires, 6 nylon standoffs, a socketted ATmega328P processor, a 4802 D/A chip, and a MCP3002 A/D chip as well as other chips mentioned in the Gertboard User Manual. I am now using the ATmega328P for recording the times of Geiger counter events and passing the results via SPI for permanent storage in the Raspberry Pi.

I just got mine as well. I don't think a ribbon cable is needed as it just piggy backs directly to Raspberry Pi
