FREESCALE SEMICONDUCTOR - FRDM-KL46Z - ARM, KINETIS KL4X USB, SEGMENT LCD, FREEDOM DEV BOARD 4 5 1 1
FRDM-KL46Z Development Platform This board is a great value for $15. The board arrived quickly and when I opened the cardboard box it caused the only 2 negative comments that I have - 1) the board was not in an anti-static bag and 2) the board was not captive in the box and it fell out onto the floor. Luckily the board survived. The documentation on the Freescale website is excellent and I was able to run the installed examples after a few minutes of setup. I liked the compass example. Starting to write my own applications now. The one concern that I have is that the board is made in China and I have had a previous bad experience with a Raspberry Pi from Element14 from China that failed intermittently after a week of operation. So far so good. The accelerometers and magnetometer plus the LCD make this a useful standalone board. February 1, 2015

A:
The board is provided with all the components assembled including the Mini USB connectors as shown in the pictures. There are no connectors (headers) provided for the IO pins, so you would have to attach your own or you could directly wire to them.

A:
Yes, it is an assembled board but the main items that have not been populated are the I/O headers and connectors. This allows you to choose your own connection methods specific to your application.

A:
To run the Out of the Box Demo, all that is required is a Mini USB to USB-A cable to provide power to the board. In order to access or program the board you also need to download and install the P&E OpenSDA USB drivers for the appropriate OS (Windows or Linux). There is an MSD Flash Programmer application that you can use to load programs. See the Quick Start Guide for info.

A:
Yes, the I/O headers on the FRDM-KL46Z are arranged to allow compatibility with peripheral boards (known as shields) that connect to Arduino and Arduino-compatible microcontroller boards, but you will need to solder header socket to the Freedom board to plug in the shield. Arduino software drivers for the shields do not apply to the ARM core architecture of the Freedom board processor.
