Product Overview

The FRDM-KL25Z proto shield kit is a Kinetis KL25Z NXP freedom platform with Arduino proto shield kit. This Freedom development platform is a low cost evaluation and development platform featuring NXP's newest ARM Cortex-M0+ based Kinetis KL25Z MCUs. The FRDM-KL25Z can be used to evaluate the KL14, KL15, KL24 and KL25 Kinetis L series devices. It features a KL25Z128VLK, a device boasting a maximum operating frequency of 48MHz, 128KB of flash, a full speed USB controller and loads of analogue and digital peripherals. The FRDM-KL25Z is the first hardware platform to feature the NXP open standard embedded serial and debug adapter known as OpenSDA. This board offers several options for serial communication, flash programming and run control debugging.

I saw a couple of chips and LEDs. But what else comes with it, and what can one do with it? Are there tutorials showing how to use all the components, or does one just guess how to put things together?

It would be good to have the instructions, schematics, and a large picture of the bundle available online before purchasing it.

Also, are the parts through-hole or SMT?

I think the bundle is an excellent idea.

I already ordered the board from you. I am trying to create my own interface board to use with my development process. But, if this proto bundle is helpful enough, I'll likely order that too.

This kit bundle does not come with any chips as accessory. The kit comes with Samtec Socket 6/8/10 positions, header 2 positions, USB cable, Freedom board and Arduino Proto Shield Kit. Arduino Proto Shield Kit contains LEDs, pushbutton switch, resistors, single line pinhead connectors. All are through parts. For detail information, refer below link-

No, the Freedom board is assembled as always. However, the Samtec sockets, headers, pushbutton, LEDs & resistors are all supplied as separate items.

Keil’s MDK, Freescale’s CodeWarrior, Atollic’s TrueStudio are a few of the Kinetis L compatible IDE's. All offer evaluation licenses to get you started. Please refer to the community link for additional information (starter guides, sample projects etc): http://www.element14.com/community/...
For advanced programming, hardware development tools such as USB powered BDM emulator - ULINK2, USBMLPPCBDM, CODE-RED Red Probe+ etc are also available. You already have a USB cable in the kit for OpenSDA debugging.

A Freescale MMA8451Q low-power, 3-axis accelerometer is interfaced through an I2C bus and two GPIO signals. By default, the I2C address is 0x1D (SA0 pulled high).
