Product Overview

The ATATMEL-ICE is a complete powerful development tool for debugging and programming ARM Cortex-M based SAM and AVR microcontrollers with onchip debug capability. It supports programming and onchip debugging of all AVR 32bit microcontrollers on both JTAG and aWire interfaces, AVR XMEGA family devices on both JTAG and PDI two wire interfaces, JTAG and SPI programming and debugging of all AVR 8bit microcontroller with OCD support on either JTAG or debugWIRE interfaces, all SAM ARM Cortex-M based microcontrollers on both SWD and JTAG interfaces and all tinyAVR 8bit microcontrollers with support for the TPI interface.

ATATMEL-ICE, Good product but less than perfect quality. I have been debating between ATATMEL-ICE and AVR Dragon for long time but after reading reviews and feature it supports, I have decided to give a shot to ATATMEL-ICE. After little bit research, I found that Newark is selling at much better price than competitors so happily ordered it and excited to see it in my hands. Now back to real product review and my first impression! Device itself appears to be nicely build except provided cables. Yes, cable appears to very fragile and low quality. Since device is in my hand for just few days, but I suspect flat ribbon cable will go bad so be ready to have one spare. I'm in hunt for a spare cable, most probably will build one for myself. Software support: TATMEL-ICE works with AVR Studio 6+ like a charm. However, I have no success of making it work with Arduino/avrdude. There is work around that problem. Generate hex file in Arduino and upload it using AVR Studio. Happy coding!!! May 5, 2015
